A robotic system for monitoring carp in Minnesota lakes
نویسندگان
چکیده
Robotic Sensor Networks (RSNs) find increasing use in environmental monitoring as RSNs can collect data from obscure, hard-to-reach places over long periods of time. This work reports progress in building a network of small, light-weight robotic rafts which will be used to monitor common carp tagged with radio transmitters across Minnesota lakes. We describe the design and architecture of the robotic raft, and demonstrate the robustness of our waypoint navigation algorithm through field tests conducted in various lakes. We also present results from experiments aimed towards localizing tagged fish. Preliminary version of this paper appeared at ICRA 2010 (Bhadauria et al., 2010).

Using ecological niche models to predict the abundance and impact of invasive species: application to the common carp.
In order to efficiently manage nonindigenous species (NIS), predictive tools are needed to prioritize locations where they are likely to become established and where their impacts will be most severe. While predicting the impact of a NIS has generally proved challenging, forecasting its abundance patterns across potential recipient locations should serve as a useful surrogate method of estimati...

متن کاملCoverage and Active Localization for Monitoring Invasive Fish with an Autonomous Boat
Carp is a highly invasive, bottom-feeding fish which pollutes and dominates lakes by releasing harmful nutrients. Recently, biologists started studying carp behavior by tagging the fish with radio-emitters. The biologists search for and localize the radio-tagged fish manually using a GPS and a directional antenna. We are developing a novel robotic sensor system in which the human effort is repl...
متن کاملThe Bernoulli Ritz-collocation method to the solution of modelling the pollution of a system of lakes
Pollution has become a very serious threat to our environment. Monitoring pollution is the rst step toward planning to save the environment. The use of dierential equations, monitoring pollution has become possible. In this paper, a Ritz-collocation method is introduced to solve non-linear oscillatory systems such as modelling the pollution of a system of lakes. The method is based upon Bernoul...
متن کاملLow downstream dispersal of young-of-year common carp from marshes into lakes in the Upper Mississippi River region and its implications for integrated pest management strategies
In lakes of the Upper Mississippi River Basin (UMRB), invasive common carp (Cyprinus carpio) employ a reproductive strategy in which adults migrate out of lakes to spawn in seasonally unstable marshes that have few egg and larval predators. The rates with which the juveniles outmigrate from marshes into adjacent lakes have critical management implications but have not been quantified using dire...
